Frequently asked questions

  • How Does a Ground Source Pump Extract Heat?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are ingenious systems that tap into the Earth’s natural warmth for both heating and cooling purposes in buildings. The process is surprisingly straightforward: GSHPs use a network of underground pipes filled with a heat-transfer fluid, usually water mixed with antifreeze. In heating mode, this fluid absorbs heat from the surrounding ground, thanks to the relatively stable temperature beneath the Earth’s surface. Once the heat is captured, the fluid is pumped into the building’s heat pump unit. Inside the heat pump, a heat exchanger elevates the heat’s temperature to a level suitable for warming the indoor spaces. This is achieved through a refrigeration cycle that compresses the heat and releases it into the building’s heating system. Whether through forced-air heating or hydronic systems, the now-heated air or fluid is distributed throughout the building, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment. GSHPs offer year-round efficiency because the Earth’s temperature remains stable below the frost line. This allows them to deliver consistent heating and cooling performance, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. Ground source heat pumps are a sustainable solution, leveraging the Earth’s renewable heat to provide eco-friendly comfort to homes and buildings.

  • A ground source pump closed loop system

The ground source heat pump uses a liquid to transfer the heat from the rock to the pump. Once this specialised liquid has transferred the heat through the pipe to the pump it returns cooled to the borehole, ready to begin the process all over again. This system is therefore known as a closed loop.

  • Harnessing the sun’s energy – rock as the heat source

When the sun’s heat penetrates the surface of the earth, this heat is retained within the rock many metres below the ground. This energy source is constant and can be extracted using specialist drill rigs which, in the case of a closed loop system will dig to depths of up to 200 metres.
