Frequently asked questions

  • What are Open Loop Ground Source Heat Pumps?

As well as extracting solar energy retained in rock beneath the surface of the earth, ground source heat pumps can be used to harness heat from groundwater.  The unit used to utilise heat from groundwater is the same used for closed loop systems but the source used and the collection process differs from that of a ground source heat pump closed loop process. Open loop systems can only be used if a clean, fresh water can be easily accessed on site. These water sources can include lakes, aquifers, and even ponds. As the volume of water required for such systems is quite significant, you would usually require an abstraction license and discharge license, all of which Miller Drilling Contractors can assist with.

  • What Projects Usually Require Ground Source Pump Boreholes?

Ground source pump boreholes can be used in an array of premises. You will find that larger projects such as social housing, or commercial settings are keen to utilise the earth’s energy via ground source boreholes. They are also preferable when space is scarce as this type of energy extraction uses vertical arrays unlike slinky pipes which lay in vertical trenches below the ground and take up a lot of vertical space which your property may simply not have. Should space be a factor in considering energy extraction, ground source pump boreholes are preferable.

  • How much space do I need to install a ground source pump borehole?

The actual borehole would not be very large at all. As long as our drilling rig can be accommodated then there is enough space for a ground source pump borehole.
